A French 18th century marble and silver coffer.
A very rare object of wonderful colour and impressive size. The mottled yellow marble panels with silver mounts and ball feet terminating stem like supports.
French early 18th century
Dimensions 26 cm by 18 cm by 15 cm
This coffer compares well with two metal and agate boxes (both in private collections) illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Tra/E. Teche, pissidi cofani e forzieri dall'Alto. Medioveo al Barocco. Bergamo, 1984 no. 493-4 p.350
All three are composed of exotic marbles and have similar mounts.
This coffer however is considerably larger in scale and has more intricate silver detailing.
